Plot

Poor Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is deeply in debt, and decides to hire someone to kidnap his wife and demand ransom from her wealthy father. Once the ransom is paid, the kidnappers will get $40,000 and Jerry gets the rest. Unfortunately, the plan goes horribly awry, and blood is shed when a cop and two innocent people are killed. The very pregnant Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) is the Chief of police who investigates the murders, determined to solve the case in her own offhanded manner.
