Plot
In World War II Casablanca, Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), exiled American and former freedom fighter, runs the most popular nightspot in town. When Nazi Major Strasser arrives in Casablanca, the sycophantic police Captain Renault does what he can to please him, including detaining Czech Resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henried). Lazslo's only hope of escape is Rick, who has come into the possession of two very valuable letters of transit out of Casablanca.
Lazslo arrives with his wife, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), Rick's one time love who broke his heart when she ran out on him in Paris. When he learns the real reason why she left him, the two of them plan to run off together again using the letters of transit. However, Rick must decide what's more important - his own happiness or the countless lives that hang in the balance.
